Night 2 of the RaceSaver IMCA Sprint Super Nationals sees Luellen, Martin, Davis & Dover win
By Greg Soukup
Night 2 of the RaceSaver IMCA Sprint Super Nationals presented by Precise Racing, Venom Energy and NMC Cat Rental Store saw a very large crowd turn out for the action Saturday night. There was no precipitation in sight, and the racers put on a show to keep the fans thrilled to be there.
There were no serious incidents in the preliminary action.
The start of the NAPA IMCA Sport Modifieds A Main saw Roger Sluka spin out in the 5S and Ken Eckhoff’s #5 attempt to avoid him, but ended up sliding sideways into him. The first official lap saw Joe Schidler’s K00 out front followed by Randy Archer in the 20, the 2R of Don Rinke and Clint Luellen in the 3L. Luellen passed both Archer and Rinke on lap 2 and took over second. Eddie Schwope Jr. put the 91 into fourth on lap 3. The next lap saw Luellen take over the lead and Shawn Harker’s 40 move into fourth. Gary Saathoff got past Harker with 5 to go, moved to third with 2 laps left and snagged second in the waning moments of the race. The top 4 were Luellen, Saathoff, Schidler and Archer.
“We’re chasing the national points, so we are hitting every race that we can to get points. We won last night, and decided to stop here tonight on our way to Boone. I want to tell everyone that this is, by far, the best facility I’ve ever seen in my career. It’s not just the track itself, it’s the whole facility and the folks who work here. You all do a great job to put on a great show. The best part is that my crew and the fans can come into the pits, but still have a grandstand viewpoint if they want to” said Luellen. Luellen’s sponsors include Luellen Farms, Lorimor Farms and Farm Boy Bodies.
Next was the A Feature for the Precise Racing Products RaceSaver IMCA Sprint Cars. Jason Martin led the pack in the 5X with Stu Snyder’s 23S, the 13 of Eric Reichwaldt and Gene Ackland’s 14G close on his push bumper. Justin Melton’s 11 slowed in turns 1 &2 on lap 4 and Chase Brewer’s 99X clipped him as he went by. After the yellow lights were turned off Ackland moved up to third. Ackland and Reichwaldt battled for the third spot until lap 7 when Reichwaldt went extremely high, allowing Ryan Hall to put the 79V into third. Lap 19 saw Snyder come into contact with a lapped car and spin into the infield. That made the top 4 Martin, Hall, Ackland and the 03 of Shayle Bade. Bade wasted no time moving up 1 spot as she passed Ackland for third on the restart. At the checkers it was Martin, Hall, Bade and the 14 of Joey Danley who passed Ackland at the end.
Martin stated “This was a great tune-up for tomorrow night, and I earned the starting spot that I wanted! Roger and the crew did one heck of a job giving us a super racy surface tonight. This showed the fans what racing at Eagle Raceway really is. I want to thank Speedway Motors for all of their help this week. I wasn’t thrilled with my showing in the “Speedy” Bill Smith Race of Champions, but tomorrow is where the gold is and I’m thrilled to be in Sunday’s A”. Martin’s sponsors include Trucks Plus and Midwest Linings.
Tyler Davis led the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature after the first circuit in his 69D and was being challenged by the 94 of Mike Hansen, Tim LaPointe in the 18 and the 4W of Joe Wollenhaupt. Hansen and Wollenhaupt both moved up 1 position to first and third respectively. Tim Kozak cracked the top 4 on lap 6, putting the 29 into fourth. Davis regained the lead on lap 8. Mark McKinney passed Kozak for fourth with 9 to go. Chad Fegley spun the 13F to the infield with 6 laps left. The final caution of the contest came when Tanner Dowty’s 7T stopped at the bottom of turn 2. Justin Busboom took the fourth spot on the last lap in his 62. The final top 4 were Davis, Hansen, Wollenhaupt and Busboom.
“I want to dedicate this win to my uncle Brian Starck who has terminal cancer. He watched us last night, but he just couldn’t make it tonight. We had a rough night last night, but this more than makes up for it. I tried to get some of the other guys from last night to come up here with me, but they all backed out so we came alone. I drew bad for the heat, but ended up getting second. I got a good draw for the feature though. I got out front and held on. I ran a few laps at Eagle last night on the R Factor racing game; maybe that helped tonight” said Davis. Davis’ sponsors include & O Ford, Schultis & Son, Countryside Vet Clinic, Schmidt Machine, Jet Racing and Schmidts Inc.
The finale for the evening was the first annual “Speedy” Bill Smith Memorial Race of Champions. John Ricketts put the 5R out front of lap 1 followed by the 20 of Luke Cranston, Jack Dover in the 4J and Brian Herbert in the 97. Tyler Thompson passed Herbert on lap 2 to put the 48 into fourth. Herbert got sideways in turn 1 and 2 on lap 3. Thompson went high to avoid him, climbed the armco and ended up flipping. A huge pile-up occurred with Snyder, Matt Richards’ 1R and the 9X of Jake Bubak all becoming involved. Snyder and Thompson both went to the pits behind wreckers. That made the top 4 Ricketts, Cranston, Dover and the 5X of Jason Martin. Dover passed Cranston on the restart and then took the lead from Ricketts with just 3 circuits remaining. The final top 4 were Dover, Ricketts, Cranston and Martin.
“Thanks to Rick Bowers for letting me run his car, and to his guys Steve & Chris for tuning it all week. I won this race in memory of Stanley who passed away recently. Also, thanks to Mom and Dad for letting me use their engine and to my crew Garret, Michael and Alex” related Dover.
